What Is Easter? What the Day Means to Christians | What Is Resurrection Sunday in the Easter Season?

What Is Easter? What the Day Means to Christians

Easter is one of the most important festivals in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, which is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. The events leading up to Jesus’ resurrection and the significance of this event are described in the Bible. In this essay, we will examine the story of Easter as described in the Bible, its significance, and the lessons that can be drawn from it.

The Story of Easter

The story of Easter begins with the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday. After his death, Jesus’ body was taken down from the cross and buried in a nearby tomb. A large stone was rolled in front of the tomb to seal it.

On the third day after his death, which was Sunday, some women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. When they arrived, they found that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. An angel appeared to them and said:

“Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” (Matthew 28:5-6)

The women were amazed and went to tell the disciples what had happened. Later that day, Jesus appeared to two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. They did not recognize him at first, but when he broke bread with them, they realized who he was.

Jesus then appeared to the rest of his disciples, who were gathered together in a room. They were frightened at first, thinking that they were seeing a ghost, but Jesus reassured them and showed them the wounds on his hands and feet. He ate with them and explained to them the Scriptures that foretold his death and resurrection.

The Significance of Easter

Easter is significant because it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Christians believe that Jesus’ resurrection is proof of his divinity and his power over death. It is also the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament, which predicted the coming of a Messiah who would rise from the dead.

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith. It is the reason why Christians believe in eternal life and the forgiveness of sins. The Apostle Paul describes the significance of the resurrection in his first letter to the Corinthians:

“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead…” (1 Corinthians 15:17-20)

The resurrection of Jesus is also a symbol of hope for humanity. It shows that death is not the end and that there is life beyond the grave. It offers comfort to those who have lost loved ones and reminds us that God has the power to overcome even death.

Lessons from Easter

The story of Easter offers several lessons for Christians and for all of humanity. Here are a few of them:

The Power of Faith

The resurrection of Jesus is a powerful example of the power of faith. The disciples had lost hope after Jesus’ death, but their faith was restored when they saw him risen from the dead. This teaches us that faith can overcome even the greatest of obstacles and that we should never lose hope in the face of adversity.

The Importance of Forgiveness

The resurrection of Jesus is also a symbol of forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross to atone for the sins of humanity, and his resurrection shows that God has forgiven us. This teaches us the importance of forgiveness in our own lives. We should forgive those who have wrong
